Director's Welcome Message

Director's Welcome Message

DCIT Students and Families:

Welcome back to the Darlington County Institute of Technology for the 2023-2024 school year!  We hope you have enjoyed your summer and are refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to embark on another exciting year of learning and growth.   Whether you are a returning student or joining our DCIT team for the first time, we are thrilled to have you as part of our dynamic community!

My name is Robbie Smith and I am proud to return for my 8th year as the director of DCIT and my 21st year in the Darlington County School District!

The faculty and staff of DCIT strive to create an environment that will provide opportunities for our students to develop the foundation necessary to reach their potential and become productive citizens.  Through a variety of Career and Technology completer pathways, we offer students between 10th and 12th grades the opportunity to get a quality education in preparation for whatever is next in your life’s journey.  The majority of our students are on a pathway that leads to a two-year technical college in degree or certifications programs, the military, or directly into the workforce.  However, we also offer a variety of pathways in Healthcare, Engineering, Business, Finance, IT, Graphic Design, etc… that could also lead to post-secondary degrees from four-year colleges and universities.

We are excited to offer Mechatronics for the first time in many years in 2023-24 due to the workforce requirements of our local industry partners who are constantly in need of Industrial Maintenance Technicians.  There are high paying careers in this area available in our local area for employers such as Sonoco, Nucor, Fiber Industries, Georgia Pacific and many others within Darlington County.  We would like to welcome our new Mechatronics instructor, Mrs. Wendy Jacobs, who has years of experience teaching Mechatronics at the high school level.

We are also excited to announce that we have a new Assistant Director this year.  Mrs. Jennifer Dunn comes to DCIT from Hartsville High School, where she served as a school counselor for the last few years.  We also have a new Student Data Manager, Mrs. Peyton Davis, who will be the first smiling face you see when you enter the main office at DCIT!

As we embark on this new academic year together we want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students remains our top priority.  Due to the abundance of high tech machinery and power equipment we use in our programs, all students will complete a safety course before venturing into the curriculum of their classes.  We also have a school counselor at DCIT who is available for the mental health needs of our students as well as individual and/or group career and college counseling sessions.

We are genuinely excited to welcome you back to DCIT for the new year.  We share your commitment to your education and future success, and we are here to support and guide you every step of the way.  We look forward to seeing your smiling faces, hearing your stories, and witnessing your remarkable achievements in the upcoming year.  Together, let’s make this the best school year ever!

Sincerely,

Robbie Smith
